LAPD Hits Australian Journalist with Rubber Bullet in L.A. Protest Chaos

In a startling moment captured live on-air, Australian television reporter Lauren Tomasi was struck by a rubber bullet fired by the Los Angeles Police Department while covering a protest in downtown L.A. The Nine News U.S. correspondent was reporting from the heart of a tense anti-immigration protest when law enforcement began dispersing the crowd with force — and Tomasi became part of the story she was trying to tell.

Tomasi was broadcasting near the Metropolitan Detention Center, where hundreds had gathered to protest a series of ICE raids across the city. As she narrated the chaotic scene — with LAPD officers advancing on horseback and firing crowd-control rounds — she was hit in the leg by a rubber bullet.

Footage of the moment shows her grabbing her calf in pain, with a nearby bystander shouting angrily, “You just f***ing shot the reporter!” Calmly but visibly affected, Tomasi responded to questions about her condition with a composed, “I’m good,” before stepping back from the frontlines.

Nine News later confirmed that Tomasi and her cameraman were safe, though the incident brought renewed focus to the risks faced by journalists covering civil unrest in the United States.

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade released a statement affirming that “all journalists should be able to do their work safely.” The issue has now escalated into a diplomatic concern, with Australian Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young urging Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to raise the matter directly with President Donald Trump in their upcoming meeting.

“This must be called out,” said Hanson-Young. “Journalists should not be shot at while doing their jobs.”
